i use categories when i visit a site, particularly if the site is quite varied. i also use my own categories with my students as i'll have them read some of my postings that are in the ed tech category. but, if you've messed up your categories then i could see just dropping them. i wonder if you can drop just the categories you no longer want. i'll bet there is a discussion on this if you visit the WordPress forums. then again, it might be easier to just use ecto or some other application to change the categories on your site . . . or drop categories altogether. ;~)

Here's a quick solution: stop displaying a category menu in the sidebar. I'm considering this, since my list is now at 15 categories, and since I'm not sure anyone actually searches via categories anyway . . .

Robert, I can't seem to find an easy way to do batch category editing. I can select many blog entries that aren't next to each other, but i think I have to open each one to change the category. once I double-click to open, the actual categories appear on the right (check boxes) and I can change them in seconds flat. But, it's still cumbersome to do it individually. Sorry.

Spam Karma is catching A LOT of comments on old posts for me as well. i just changed the settings to make a post old after 15 days and I changed the setting from Normal to Strong for determining whether a comment is spam or not. I had a few comments that were spam make it onto my site recently, but by and large, Spam Karma has been pretty good. I've only had 1 false negative (that I can recall) in all of the time I've used it, so it has that going for it as well.

Hey Sean,

Does ecto have a batch category editing feature? I've been searching in vain for a way of reorganizing my categories (they're getting away from me), and Wordpress doesn't have anything avaiable for its 2.0 version yet.

In other news, the spam spiders are driving me crazy. I've been trying to protect my blog with various plugins (Bad Behavior, etc.), but am still getting about 20 spam comments per day per day on old posts. Trying a new plugin that automatically moderates posts that are older than 15 days.
