i just installed SMF. it is complicated in the sense that it appears to be quite feature laden. but, i think it might be worth a try . . . i am going to fiddle for a while and see.

regarding e-reserve, i haven't used it. i have given my students articles to read, but i just give them the citation and expect them to login and find it (i give them some directions). i am sure e-reserve would be easier. that being said, one of my colleagues LOVES it. she uses it every semester and says that the librarians are very, very helpful and will even scan articles, etc. that aren't online. based on her recommendation, i'd say that it's a great service. :~)

Hey Sean,

Other Rob here. I have a Simple Forums message board set up for ACE (aceworkshop.org) and I'm not sure about it yet. Seems a little complicated for my purposes, but I haven't really explored it fully.

On a related note--what has your experience with e-reserve been like?

i'll have to fiddle with it. it's one of the freebies that's easily installed with bluehost, isn't it? if so, i could have it up and working in the next two minutes (or less).

since you love it, i'll give it a whirl this semester -- i won't be teaching online so i can try it in a weekend class i am teaching.

thanks rob.

I'm going to keep pitching Simple Machines Forums until you give it a try, Sean. ;-)

Seriously, I love it. All of the modules you described come as part of the package (viewing full posts, member list restrictions for non-members and certain membergroups). I've set up a very secure forum for my classes, and I would be more than willing to let you check it out if you'd like.

Feel free to e-mail me if interested, and I'll create an account for you.
